The Municipality and Planning Department – Ajman (MPDA) has announced the Zero-Carbon Schools Initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman and Chairman of the Executive Council, during the 7th Ajman International Environment Conference, in line with the endeavors intended to achieve the sustainability principles, reach carbon neutrality, and keep up with the UAE’s plans of achievi ng zero carbon by 2050.
In this connection, Engineer Khaled Moeen Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector, asserted that the MPDA announced the Initiative within the activities of the 7th Ajman International Environment Conference, adding that spreading positive culture among the emerging generation is the MPDA’s most important goals in the vital sector.
Eng. Al Hosani said that the Initiative is geared towards achieving ambitious goals targeting schools, to reduce their carbon footprint and get to zero carbon. It contributes to taking down emissions, improving school environment, and reducing their impacts on the environment, he added.
The Initiative is one of the MPDA’s initiatives tailored to motivate new and existing schools to adopt green practices to ensure goals are achieved, Al Hosani added.
He went on saying the Initiative will bear positive results; transforming schools into educational institutions whose operation relies on renewable energy sources, a matter which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the quality of the air surrounding schools by adopting environmentally friendly practices. He spoke about the role of schools in pioneering environmental sustainability by following the necessary measures, including installing solar energy systems to generate electricity, improving the cooling, ventilation and air conditioning system to cut down energy consumption, encouraging the sustainable use of resources and managing source waste.
It is noteworthy that the Initiative enhances local and global efforts aimed to combat climate change and achieve sustainability.
