The Municipality and Planning Department- Ajman (MPDA) has obtained the CLIMATE NEUTRAL NOW Certificate issued by the United Nations, as a culmination of the Department’s efforts in the field of sustainability and carbon neutrality, becoming the first institution regionally and the fourth globally as a municipal work specialized authority to win this certificate.
In this regard, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Department, honored the work team, voicing his pride in obtaining the global certificate that is granted to leading entities committed to reducing emissions. The Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention launched the Climate Neutrality Now Initiative to enhance climate action by involving non-party stakeholders, including governments, companies, institutions and individuals. The Department managed to align its projects with the Initiative and worked hard for enhancement of use, encouragement of emission reductions, and enhancement of carbon trading, His Excellency added.
His Highness said that the Department boasts its ambitious competencies that work round the clock to protect environment, preserve its natural resources, establish a positive culture among all, and support innovative practices in the vital field, noting that intensified efforts and unified goals played great part in the honorable achievement that is added to the Department’s record of success and excellence.
For his part, Engineer Khaled Moeen Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector, explained to His Highness that the Department has obtained the global certificate after passing all the stages of audit and review, which include carbon emission measuring, emission reduction practices, and contributing to the emission reduction. The Department counted the carbon emissions released from its buildings, and highlighted its environmental activities and initiatives related to waste management and enhancing environmental sustainability, he noted
Al Hosani added that the Department is moving under ambitious visions to achieve the best positive results in the environmental field, as it launched the Ajman Path to Carbon Neutrality and adopted myriad green practices to be applied with the aim to ensure the achievement of the goals by enhancing the use of clean energy to generate electricity. This is in addition to waste-at-source segregation, recycling and sorting. Environmentally friendly means of transport, such as hybrid cars or traditional cars, will be used, but by using environmentally safe fuel, replacing some raw materials, changing the production system, and relying on recycling processes for the resulting waste, as well as developing targets to reduce carbon emissions, a matter which will enhance the Department’s plan to preserve environmental resources.
It is worth mentioning that the global certificate is designed to encourage the Climate Neutrality Now Initiative and back it through work hard to achieve a climate neutral world by 2050, as stipulated in the Paris Agreement, and to reinforce further action with regard to climate, and link it with the Ajman Path to Carbon Neutrality 2050.
